COMMON DENTAL CARE MYTHS
Here at Edmonton Emergency Dental Clinic, our mission is to provide the highest quality of dental services and care. We treat each patient as a welcomed guest and provide prompt emergency dental services. Even though a lot of advancements have taken place in modern dentistry, there are still many dental myths that are very popular. Today, we are here to debunk some of the really popular dental myths and present you with the truth about some common dental misconceptions.

  1. Lemon juice is a nice natural alternative for whitening: Lemon juice do whitens your teeth, but it also impacts your enamel. It whitens because it is acidic in nature, but that same acidity also damages the enamel, weakening your teeth as a whole.
  2. Bleaching weakens your teeth: Bleaching whitens your teeth by striping the color from the pigmentation of your teeth, but doesn't affect the enamel. But, too much bleaching can remove sufficient discoloration to make your teeth look unnaturally translucent. Some people also feel temporary sensitivity and irritation; however, it doesn't affect the overall health of your teeth.
  3. You should stop brushing and flossing if your gums are bleeding: Even if looks logical to give bleeding gums a break, gum usually start to bleed when debris and plaque buildup and cause discomfort. Removing the plaque can allow your gums to heal. Remember, flossing can cause the gums to bleed, initially, but that doesn't imply that you should stop doing it.
  4. No visible problems, means you don't need to visit a dentist: Just because your teeth look perfect doesn't mean they are actually healthy. It is never a good idea to skip your dental appointment. You should visit your dentist at least two times in a year for checkup and dental cleaning to ensure that your teeth remain healthy and any dental issue is treated before the problem aggravates.
  5. Brushing more can harm enamel: We suggest using a soft toothbrush to avoid being very rough on gums and teeth. By doing so, you won't be having any problems brushing your teeth twice a day or if possible after each meal.
  6. Chewing gum will cause tooth decay: If you are chewing the sugary gums, it can definitely affect your dental health, but sugar-free gum can actually assist in preventing stains, gum disease and decay, especially if chewed after meals.
  7. Fruit juice is a healthier option to soda: People usually think that anything with 'fruit' in it would be healthier than soda, however, a more apt name for many 'juices' on the market today would be 'fruit flavored beverage'. Many have very less quantity of fruit juice and the sugar content is as high as that of soda.
