Tooth abscess or dental abscess is a buildup of pus inside the gums or teeth. It is caused by a bacterial infection. Plaque buildup also causes bacterial growth and this in turn effects the health of your teeth and gums and damage them. If the plaque is not removed regularly or you don’t follow effective dental cleaning regime, the bacteria may spread in the soft tissue inside the gums or tooth, eventually resulting in an abscess.

Basically, dental abscess is classified into three different types:

  • Periapical abscess: This abscess starts in the soft pulp of the tooth
  • Periodontal abscess: This abscess commences in the supporting bone tissue structures of the teeth
  • Gingival abscess: This abscess is only in the gum tissue and doesn’t affect the tooth
Dental abscess if left untreated can worsen, resulting in the damage of bone tissue.

Symptoms of tooth abscess:

Here are a few really common symptoms of dental abscess:

  • Pain, swelling, redness
  • Pain in the affected area on biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold liquids and food
  • Foul taste in the mouth
  • Fever
  • Difficulty in opening mouth
  • Problems swallowing your food
  • Insomnia
Treatment for a tooth abscess:

Only a dentist can treat a tooth abscess. Treatment may include typical dental procedure like cleaning and in some severe cases surgery.

  • Incision: The abscess should be incised (cut out) and the pus, containing bacteria must be drained away. Local anesthetic may be given before the procedure.
  • Treatment for a periapical abscess: In case of periapical abscess root canal treatment is recommended. A drill is used to create a hole in the dead tooth in order to drain away the pus. Damaged tissue will be removed from pulp. In the space, a root filling is then inserted to prevent further problems.
  • Treatment for periodontal abscess: The periodontal pocket will be cleaned by draining the abscess. The surfaces of the root of the tooth will then be smoothed out by smoothing and scaling below the gum line. This assists the tooth to heal and prevents further infections from happening.
Surgery for dental abscesses:

In case of patients with a periapical abscess and returning infection, surgery is recommended in order to remove the disease tissue completely.

In case of patients with a periodontal abscess and returning infection, gum tissues have to be reshaped and the periodontal pocket removed.

If the dental abscess reappears even after the surgery, the tooth may be removed.
