Emergencies happen all the time and thankfully today almost all the conditions can be handled instantly including your dental emergency. Dental emergencies are very common with people who don't maintain proper oral hygiene. But, dental emergencies can happen to anyone, including the sportspersons, kids, old people and even you. However, a lot of people find it difficult to find out that what conditions need emergency dental services and what dental issues can be delayed till tomorrow.

According to some reports, more than half a million people visit the emergency room for dental issues. However, deciding when to see an emergency dentist completely depends on you and the condition you are suffering from. Say, if you are experiencing acute pain in your tooth or you are having difficulty talking or eating due to numbness in your mouth, then you might need to see a dentist instantly. The situations also differ from a person to person, as some people can take the pain very easily while some find it hard to endure even the slightest amount of pain and discomfort.

Nevertheless, here we are listing some of the 'not so serious' as well as 'very serious' dental issues. Depending on the situation and your condition you can decide that when to book an appointment.

The 'not so serious' dental emergencies include:

Toothache

Abscess

Swollen gums

Lost fillings

Root canal trouble

Chipped tooth

Broken dentures

Loose crowns

Mouth ulcers

Wisdom teeth problems

The 'more serious' emergency dental conditions include:

Severe bleeding

Dislocated, broken or fractured jaw

Loss of consciousness

Swelling in the neck or face area

There are some of the emergency dental conditions that should be treated ASAP. However, even when contacting an emergency dentist, your objective should try and prevent the damage as much as possible. You should be prepared with some items that can help you prevent the further damage, pain, and discomfort.

You should have an emergency dentist kit for such conditions that should include items like: pain killers, a packet of sugar-free gum, a small container, gauze, Q-tips and salt packets and most importantly the contact number of your emergency dentist.

Say, you met an accident that involves the mouth, like the loss of tooth, then the first thing you should do is to clean your mouth with warm salt water. For relieving the pain, you can take traditional non-prescription medications. On the other hand, if you have injuries in the inner layers of the tooth like nerves and dentin have incurred some damage, they can be covered with sugar free gum. These temporary relieves can at least keep the problem in control for the time until you visit the emergency dentist.

Finding a right dentist will always help you for a better guide to take care of your oral health. They not only suggest you how to take precautions but they also help you in various aspects for the healthy gums and teeth. Here in this article we are going to discuss the main points that are given by the dentist and American Dental Association.

Regular brushing

This is probably the basic care everyone should be concerned about when it comes to teeth and gums. Regular brushing of the teeth ensures healthy mouth, removing of plaque and tartar, the food particles that might be in the crevices between the teeth, and it freshens up your breath. The toothpaste that you are using must have fluoride content and should be approved by the American Dental Association. Same goes in the case of the toothbrush you use for brushing. It should have bristles that are soft and should be of the right size.

Flossing

People have a tendency to think that if they have done the brushing of the teeth then they have done everything in the healthy oral care. Flossing is as important as brushing of the teeth as it eliminates all the food particles that are trapped in the tight spaces between the teeth. Flossing before the bedtime is recommended by the dentists help and benefits in Edmonton.

Having an healthy diet

The food you are eating affects the oral health a lot. Eating too much of junk and oily food will not only stain the teeth but it will also result in the bad breath. Make sure that your diet contains plenty of green vegetables and calcium. Do take the intake that has vitamin C. avoiding too much of sugar and eating it in a required only amount helps you in the healthy teeth and gums.

Visiting the dentist on regular basis

Last but not the least is the most important thing that you need to do! Visiting the dentist regularly makes sure that you have a tab on the health of the gums and teeth. The dentist can spot the early signs of tooth decay and can make you aware of it which you cannot do at home. If you are too prone to gum bleeding and tooth ache then it’s highly advisable that you visit your dentist once in every 4 months. A right dentist will not only guide you to the proper oral care but he helps you in the various other aspects as well. You can be sure of avoiding things that you need to avoid and he guides you in the right manner when you get some oral problems. Reaching for the problem at the early stage is always better than going to the end of it and then getting it rectified. The dentist makes sure that all of your oral problems are in check and you continue to smile happily in healthy teeth and gums.

Signs of a bad dentist

Bad dentist
Finding a reliable dentist is necessary to ensuring the health and long life of your teeth and gums. Sadly, not all dentists are same. Despite the fact that there are severe training requirements and intensive regulations related to patient care, still some bad dentists exist. So, how to differentiate between a good dentist from a bad dentist? Eventually, if you have good terms with your Sherwood Park dentists, you feel he/she respects you, and you trust him/her, then you have certainly found yourself a good dentist. However, these signs of a bad dentist are all obvious signs that you should consider finding a new dentist.

Disorganized:  Firstly, medical environments should be hygienic and sterile and a disorganized office may be your first sign that things are not properly cleaned. In addition, disorganization may be the indication of poor management skills and business. Clinic of your dentist should be well-organized and tidy, dusted, and swept. Everything should look organized. Dentist as well as staff members should wear gloves when working with the clients.

Dentists who talk to other patients or busy on their cell phone while consulting or treating you: A dentist should be focused. A procedure can go in the wrong direction if the dentist who is performing the procedure is not focused. The poorly performed procedures can cause problems later. The lack of focus of dentists also shows their unprofessionalism. During your visit to Sherwood Park dentists, you should expect your dentist to be focused on you.

Prescribing costly operations for small tooth problems: There are many dentists in Edmonton, who prescribe root canals for a tooth that only has a cavity and by filling the cavity the problem, can be solved. They usually suggest costly, unnecessary X-ray diagnoses as they get commission from the radiographer for each patient they refer.

So, when looking for a dentist in Edmonton, ensure that you keep these things in mind to ensure that you hire only the best and reliable dentist.

Three Dental Treatments You Should Get

10/29/2014

The dental world has its own set of procedures that help maintain your teeth. There are the ones that you have to take to solve a serious problem in your mouth, and there those that will help keep your teeth awesome.

These three dental treatments keep your teeth awesome and are something you should ask your dentist about.

Periodontal Exam

A periodontal exam is something you can get done once a year at least. A periodontal exam consists of the dentist running a thorough probe through each tooth. He will measure the tooth, check its health, take a look at the gums and support tissue, and keep an eye out for any decay or infections.

The probe is done by using a narrow instrument that has measurements in millimeters. The dentist will measure the depth of pockets around your tooth. These pocket depths will help him determine if you are suffering from a periodontal disease. You have probably heard of gingivitis and periodontitis. They are periodontal diseases that affect the tissues surrounding your teeth.

Usually, anything deeper than 2-3 millimeters is a cause of concern.

Additionally, the dentist will check for any gum bleeding and swelling.

Dental Sealant

Dental sealant is for everybody and not just children. It is a protective barrier that stops bacteria from growing in the pit, groves and crevices of teeth. It is an effective way to stop cavities before they even start. Sealants put on children wear off by the time they reach adulthood.

Once you are an adult, you have only one set of teeth that won't re-grow if it falls off. By stopping bacteria and preventing cavities, you effectively lower the chances of being affected by tooth decay.

In terms of costs, a sealant is a much better option compared to fillings (which is added once you're affected by a cavity).

On an average, a sealant will last for ten years, so you should get this procedure done every decade.

Teeth Whitening

By the time you are an adult, your teeth may have lost their whiteness and may now carry a yellow or brown tinge. With the different types of food and drinks we consume, teeth discoloration is bound to happen. Teeth whitening get rids of that color tinge and adds the white dazzle back in your smile. You have quite a few options when it comes to teeth whitening.

- Whitening Strips, Gels and Pastes

There are many whitening strips, gels and pastes that contain peroxide, a bleach agent. A quick rub of the gel or paste will give your teeth a quick shine.

- In-Office Whitening

The fastest and most effective way to get your teeth looking shinny and brand new is through in-office whitening. It requires a visit to the dentist who uses a high concentration bleach agent and heat to whiten the teeth.

These dental treatments are not to be done regularly, but they can add more value to your regular dental checkup. They are relatively simple, pain free and in the long run, keep your teeth awesome.
